A regrettable mistake. A robbery was committed in a nightclub off Montparnasse. The culprit is quickly identified: it is the young Emile Paulus, which the police can not find. The building on Lhomond Street, where Paulus rented a room, is closely guarded.
One evening, while on duty, Inspector Janvier is seriously injured by a gunshot. Maigret decides to carry out the investigation himself and, his wife being absent from Paris, he settles in the building of the Rue Lhomond where reigns Mlle ClĂ©ment, the affable — but a bit mischievous — owner.
