Bowie succeeds in blending American rhythms and western European harmonies and adopts an alter ego for this creative phase, the Thin White Duke, a shadowy figure who returns to Europe from America to explore her roots. The album has been remastered several times throughout the years. The first of these was in 1991 by Rykodisc, featuring live versions of “Word on a Wing and “Stay as bonus tracks; in 1997, Rykodisc reissued the album on a gold CD as part of their limited–edition Au20 line. The second remaster was by EMI and Virgin Records in 1999; this version lacked any bonus tracks and featured no–noising to remove tape hiss.
