Narrative

This one got rather complicated. I have, since childhood, been aware that my father - Jan Eigil Holmboe - was adopted by Halvar Holmboe. It was a fact that, sadly, I was not curious enough about to ask while my mother and father were alive.

When I started researching the family lines, I ran into a problem. Luckily, in Norway, we have a law which gives permission for children of adopted parents to get the name(s) of their grandparents.

A number of bureaucracies later the name Øivind Aksel Rinker popped out. That gave me an in to the Rinker family of Porsgrunn, Norway, and a thread to pull.

Øivind Aksel - commonly known as Eivind or Eivinn (to complicate things) met my biological grandmother Ruth Olsen at some point during the late summer of 1935; the math says so - dad was born in March of '36 ...

And then he disappeared. Ruth married Halvar in 1943; dad was adopted in 1960.

Øivind went to sea in 1938 and sailed back and forth on the Atlantic (mostly) until settling in the USA 1956. He died in Brooklyn 1962, 52 years old. He, and his new wife Astrid Lassen, are both buried in Green-Woods cemetery, Brooklyn. I have found no records of any children.
